Recently a client engaged the services of our Family Law Accredited Specialist Sean Cahill on his parenting and financial matters following his separation from his wife. He was hoping for a particular range of outcome.
After taking instructions, Sean advised him of the range that he could reasonably expect to receive and following this advice the client revised his expectations and the range he was willing to accept.
Following our advice the client came to an amicable arrangement with his wife after having a full and frank discussion with her over coffee.
About 10 days after the coffee meeting, Sean received a letter from a solicitor acting for the wife confirming that an agreement had been reached. The terms of the agreement were in accordance with the advice that Sean had given.
The agreement is in the process of being drawn up, and the legal fees will be far less than the range of our initial estimate of fees in our costs agreement.
The moral of the story is that if you have an experienced solicitor who provides proper advice from the outset, and you have two separate parties who are amicable and able to maintain a level of communication, and are willing to accept the legal advice they are both given, the legal side of their post separation arrangements can be documented on a final basis within a short timeframe and under budget.
