Did you know that the NSW Government has recently introduced a scheme to allow NSW Police to issue on the spot fines of $400 and/or Criminal Infringement Notices to people found carrying small amounts of illicit drugs for personal use including but not limited to cocaine, Ice, MDMA etc. The purpose behind this scheme is to encourage those who have received a Criminal Infringement Notice to complete a health intervention program for drugs and/or alcohol. In the event the perpetrator has successfully completed a health intervention program their $400 fine will consequently be treated as paid.
This is being introduced in an effort to rehabilitate users of drugs and alcohol, reduce the addiction, and prevent the associated crime that stems from drugs and alcohol.
This scheme should also assist with taking the pressure off the court system who are unfortunately overloaded with small quantity drug matters.
